New phone features 'baffle users'

Children using mobile phones, BBC
Setting up a new mobile phone is no longer child's play.

The complexity of modern mobile phones is leaving users frustrated and angry, research suggests.

Some 61% of those interviewed in the UK and US said setting up a new handset is as challenging as moving bank accounts.

Compiled by consultants Mformation, the survey found 85% of users reporting they were frustrated by the difficulty of getting a new phone up and working.

Of those questioned, 95% said they would try more new services if the technology was easier to set up.

Virtually real

I first realized the complexity of the virtual v's real during my final year at University. All dissertations needed to by typed up. Typically I had no money to pay and approached the “computer room” with trepidation. Actually everything went OK. I had done three or four weeks of typing at an after school class and so my typing was better than expected. Just as I was completing and my fingers were dropping off with the pain I saved the document. Suddenly the letters started fluttering down off the end of the sentences and words, they fell more and more and slowly a pile of letters started collecting like sand at the bottom of the screen. I was dumbfounded “but they’re not real. They are blobs of lights how can they fall and pile up?”
It was a virus and until I knew this, my mind had been blown away for a moment.. the virtual became “real”. The letters had solidness a form they had presence. They were living!

Social history

It is about life in the past for men, women and children of all social groups and about
the historical causes and consequences of social change.
It is concerned with the nature of family life, work and consumer behavior. The social and cultural implications of the growth of modern government and its welfare agencies.
Developments in the material environment in areas such as housing or food.
Changing social processes and social relationships that arise out of economic modernisation, the growth of urban living and advances in modern science and technology. As well as changes in cultural attitudes and beliefs about family life, gender, religion and health
